PRBA Testifies and Files Comments on CPSC Lithium ion Battery

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) held a public forum on lithium ion battery regulations and micromobility safety on July 27, 2023. The primary focus of the forum was to consider whether the Agency should propose through a rulemaking process a mandatory safety standard for lithium ion battery-powered micromobility devices. Based on testimony from industry trade association representatives, including PRBA, standards organizations, two United States Senators, one United States Representative, officials with the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY), and CPSC Commissioners, there was a general consensus that CPSC should immediately proceed to adopt a mandatory national safety standard for lithium ion battery-powered micromobility devices.

The safety of lithium ion batteries was generally discussed several times during the forum but there was no indication that CPSC intends to proceed with a rulemaking other than to address micromobility devices at this time.
