PRBA Attends International Dangerous Goods Meetings in Montreal and Geneva; Substantive Changes to Lithium ion Battery Transport Regulations Forthcoming.

The international dangerous goods regulations governing the transport of lithium ion batteries continue to evolve and PRBA participated in two recent meetings where these issues were addressed. The ICAO Dangerous Goods Panel met in November 2023 in Montreal, Canada and agreed to substantial changes to the state of charge limits on lithium ion batteries shipped packaged with equipment, and lithium ion battery powered vehicles. PRBA issued a detailed report on the ICAO meeting and hosted a PRBA virtual meeting in December 2023 to explain these changes to the PRBA members. The UN Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods met in Geneva, Switzerland in December 2023 to address several proposals to amend the UN Model Regulations (one of which was prepared and presented by PRBA). In addition, the UN’s Informal Lithium Battery Working Group met for three days to continue its work on a new hazard-based classification system for lithium ion and lithium metal batteries. PRBA will be issuing a report this month that provides an update on the UN Sub-Committee’s and Informal Working Group’s work.
