U.S. Department of Transportation Publishes Updated Lithium Battery Guide for Shippers

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has released an updated edition of its Lithium Battery Guide for Shippers. The document provides guidance on how to properly ship and package lithium cells and batteries for transport in all modes of transport in accordance with the U.S. Hazardous Materials Regulations, 49 CFR Parts 171-180. The document is a collection of distinct shipping guides for lithium batteries (UN3480/UN3090), equipment packed with or containing lithium batteries (UN3481/UN3091), battery powered vehicles (UN3171), and cargo transport units (UN3536). PHMSA consulted with PRBA on the updated information and new graphics in the document used to depict cargo transport units, which are found in Guide #10 (pages 36 and 37).
